Unusual and Fun Royal Portraits

We’ll be rolling out some posts on royal portraits this month and today we’re looking at some unusual but fun ones. There are so many stuffy and staid portraits out there that these are so refreshing

The Queen Mum

These are just so much fun, right? This first portrait was taken by Lord Snowdon in 1997. We have the Queen, her diamond-encrusted watch, a sensible rain coat, and her fishing hat.

This more relaxed photo isn’t technically a portrait but it deserves to be here. It was taken in the woods of Balmoral by Margaret Rhodes, the Queen Mum’s niece (and one of Princess Elizabeth’s seven bridesmaids).

It was taken by Margaret’s former husband Lord Snowdon and only released after her death in 2002.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

This portrait was taken at Drottingham Palace in Stockholm by Jonas Fredwall Karlsson in 2003. That’s the royal family’s pet dog Jambo having a snooze (more on Royal Pets here).

The Crown Prince Family of Denmark

You see, they were having their apartment at the palace refurbished so the idea for this portrait for Vogue was cooked up. with that in mind. A bit random… and fun that they were game to get all dolled up for it.

Love these, too.

Princess Mette-Marit of Norway

The palace released this delightful portrait of Mette-Marit, taken in the summer of 2006. It is so refreshing and relaxed.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway

Mette-Marit’s daughter Princess Ingrid turned ten years old on January 21, 2014. As our post on her explains she is the future Queen of Norway and the palace released this photo for the occasion.

  1. I’d have to say the photo of Queen Mum in her fishing hat is my fave. So relaxed and real.

  2. My favorite is absolutely Margaret taking a bath with her tiara. Because why not!

I also love the Danish family, Mette-Marit’s, and I like the balloon photo with Ingrid, but I wish we got one of her smiling!

  3. Denmark’s royal family takes the cake – or does it belong to Vogue? Either way, super-fun and modern, yet with a touch of that Northern Renaissance painting aesthetic.

  4. The Crown Prince Family of Denmark has the scenery as if they just moved house and their expressions of “Oh, hei, what are you doing here?” are hilarious considering how they’re dressed.
