It’s been months since we took a look at a royal engagement ring, so we figured it’s high time we looked at a new one. So far, we’ve looked at the engagement rings of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Grace Kelly, Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Princess Letizia of Spain, Princess Victoria of Sweden, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Princess Mary of Denmark.
Today, we’re going to look at the engagement ring that Prince Joachim gave to Marie Cavallier, his second wife. Marie was first photographed with the prince in the summer of 2005 and after much speculation, they announced their engagement on October 3, 2007.
They held a press conference that day and talked about how Prince Joachim proposed during a summer holiday in Turkey. To check out the press conference for yourself, check out this youtube video. It’s six minutes long and you can really see Marie’s sense of humour and relaxed personality. At one point she even admits she’s excited to be a Princess. I mean, as true as that might be, that is something that is just not done!
Marie’s engagement ring features a central diamond flanked by a ruby and a sapphire and set in a wide gold band. It was designed with these red, white and blue stones as a nod to the French flag in recognition of Marie’s French heritage. As Marie said in the interview “so I can keep a bit of the French.” She also revealed that she only receive the ring the day before the announcement. Of this delay Prince Joachim said “when we knew there was no chance the press was going to see it then I dared.”
Here’s a closer look at the ring.
Both Prince Joachim and Prince Frederik gave their fiancee’s symbolic engagement rings. As we discussed in the post on Princess Mary’s ring, Prince Frederik gave her a diamond flanked by two rubies to represent the Danish flag. Prince Joachim also gave his first wife Princess Alexandra a diamond and ruby ring, perhaps for the same reason. We’ll talk more about her ring in an upcoming post.
Marie’s ring certainly has a lot of sentiment behind it, but definitely isn’t one of my favourites. There’s just too much going on! Marie seems to like it, though, which is the main thing! This photo shows that she seems to wear the engagement ring on her right hand, and her wedding band is on the traditional left:
The wedding was held on May 24, 2008.
The couple recently christened their second child, Princess Athena. Check out our post on that lovely event here. That’s their son Henrik holding Joachim’s hand as they head into the church:
Prince Joachim also has two sons with his first wife Alexandra, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix. They were at the christening as well and are pictured here with their grandparents Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik:
What do you think of Princess Marie’s ring?
